3 Genuinely Easy Homemade Dog Treats (That My Dogs Actually Eat)
Most homemade dog treat recipes online seem designed to impress other people on Pinterest rather than to be practical. These three I genuinely make regularly — they're fast, cheap, and my dogs eat them immediately.
1. Beef Liver Bites (5 minutes)
Buy chicken or beef liver from any supermarket. Chop into small cubes. Place on a baking sheet lined with foil. Bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until dried but not brittle. Store in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze in batches.
These are incredibly high-value training treats. Every dog I've ever met goes absolutely mad for them. They're also cheap: a 400g tub of chicken liver costs about £1 and makes hundreds of small treats.
2. Sweet Potato Chews (10 minutes active)
Slice sweet potato into thin strips (about 5mm). Spread on a baking sheet. Bake at 130°C for 3–4 hours until leathery. Allow to cool fully before storing. Last up to two weeks in an airtight container.
Safe for almost all breeds including those with fructose sensitivities like the Veldtspitz — sweet potato contains glucose, not fructose.
3. Sardine Biscuits (15 minutes)
Blend one tin of sardines in water (drained), one egg, and 120g of wholemeal flour or oat flour into a stiff dough. Roll to 5mm thickness. Cut into small shapes. Bake at 180°C for 18–20 minutes. Cool completely.
Rich in omega-3s. Smells terrible to humans, which is apparently perfect for dogs.
